RAPID PLASMA REAGIN TEST
DESCRIPTION – RPR is a screening test for syphilis. It measures substances called antibodies that are present in the blood of people who may have the disease. Blood is drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand
METHODOLOGY – semi quantitative charcoal agglutination
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 24 hours; refrigerated: 2 weeks; frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – plasma, CSF or other body fluids
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
