HAPTOGLOBIN TEST
DESCRIPTION – this test measures the amount of haptoglobin in the blood. Haptoglobin is a protein made by your liver. It attaches to a certain type of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative immunoturbidimetry
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
PATIENT PREPARATION – fasting specimen required
COLLECT – plasma separator or serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 3 months; refrigerated: 8 months; frozen: 1 month
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – grossly hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
