GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE TEST
DESCRIPTION – a glomerular filtration rate is a blood test that checks how well your kidneys are working. Your kidneys have tiny filters called glomeruli. These filters help remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. A GFR test estimates how much blood passes through these filters each minute
METHODOLOGY – quantitative enzymatic
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
PATIENT PREPARATION –
COLLECT – plasma separator tube or serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 ml of serum to the transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 1 week; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 3 months
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS – specimens collected through catheter. Specimens collected with potassium oxalate
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
