ACETONE SERUM TEST
DESCRIPTION – acetone serum testing is used to access acetone levels in the blood and confirm diseases such as ketonuria, metabolic acidosis and malnutrition, which raise ketone body concentration in the body
METHODOLOGY – quantitative gas chromatography
TURN AROUND TIME – 1-3 days
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – plain red, lavender (EDTA), green (sodium heparin)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – separate the specimen from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum or plasma to transport tube. Cap tube tightly to minimize alcohol loss.
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 5 days; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 1 month
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – whole blood, plasma separator tube and serum separator tube
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
