Synovial Fluid Routine Test

The purpose of the Synovial Fluid Routine Test is to help diagnose the cause of joint pain and inflammation. Inflammation is the body's response to infection or injury. In the affected area, it may cause pain, swelling, redness and loss of function in the affected area. The cause of joint problems are:

• Gout: a type of arthritis issue that may cause inflammation in one or more joints. specially in the big toe.
• Rheumatoid arthritis: a conditon in which the body's immnue system attack healthy cells in your joints
• Joint effusiton a condition that happens when too much fluid builds up around a joint. It often affects the knee. When it affects the knee, it may be referred to as knee effusion or fluid on the knee.

Your joint may be sore for a few days following the procedure. Serious complications, such as infection and bleeding, are possible but rare.

Arthrocentesis, also known as joint aspiration, will be used to collect your synovial fluid. Throughout the procedure:

A medical professional will clean the skin on and around the affected joint.
The provider will administer an anaesthetic and/or apply a numbing cream to the skin to ensure that you are not in pain during the procedure. If your child is having the procedure, he or she may be given a sedative as well. Sedatives are medications that have a calming effect and aid in the reduction of anxiety.
After inserting the needle, your provider will withdraw a sample of synovial fluid and collect it in the needle's syringe.
A small bandage will be applied to the area where the needle was inserted by your provider.

It is possible that you will need to fast (not eat or drink) for several hours before the test. Your doctor will tell you if you need to fast and if you need to follow any special instructions.
