DESCRIPTION – a vitamin E test measures the amount of vitamin E in your blood. Vitamin E is a nutrient that is important for many blood processes. It helps your nerves and muscles work well, prevents blood clots and boosts the immune system.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative high performance liquid chromatography.
TURN AROUND TIME – 1-3 days
PATIENT PREPARATION – patient should fast for 12 hours and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection
COLLECT – green (sodium heparin) or serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum to transport tube and avoid hemolysis
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – refrigerated: 1 month; frozen: 1 year (-20 degrees C)
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – whole blood or body fluids other than serum or plasma
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
