VITAMIN C TEST
DESCRIPTION – a vitamin C blood test detects vitamin C deficiency. Preparation: fasting for 10-12 hours required. Refrain from taking vitamin C supplements or fruits 24 hours prior to sample collection.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative high performance liquid chromatography
TURN AROUND TIME – 1-6 days
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – green (sodium heparin) or plasma separator tube. Place the specimen in ice bath immediately
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – protect from light, centrifuge, transfer plasma and freeze within 1 hour of collection. Transfer 1 ml of plasma to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – critical frozen and light protected
STABILITY – frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – EDTA plasma, whole blood or body fluids and grossly hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
