TLC TEST

DESCRIPTION – Total leukocyte count test measures the total number of all the leukocytes in the blood. Leukocytes are white colored blood cells that defend our bodies against infections and diseases. This test helps determine the body’s capacity to fight diseases.

METHODOLOGY – quantitative flow cytometry

TURN AROUND TIME – 1-3 days

PATIENT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – lavender (EDTA), pink (potassium EDTA), or green (sodium heparin)

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transport 4 ml whole blood

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – critical room temperature

STABILITY – ambient: 48 hours (heparin) and 72 hours (EDTA)

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – clotted or hemolyzed specimens

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
