SERUM UREA TEST
DESCRIPTION – The blood urea nitrogen test, which is also called BUN or serum BUN test, measures how much of the waste product you have in your blood. If your levels are off the normal range, this could mean that either your kidneys or your liver may not be working properly
METHODOLOGY – quantitative spectrophotometry
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
PATIENT PREPARATION –
COLLECT – plasma separator or serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transport 1 ml of serum or plasma to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 1 week; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS – specimens containing sodium fluoride
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
