MYOGLOBIN TEST
DESCRIPTION – a myoglobin test measures the amount of myoglobin, a protein found in your skeletal muscles and heart muscles, in your blood or urine. Healthcare providers may use a myoglobin blood test to detect muscle damage.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative chemiluminiscent immunoassay
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – plain red or serum separator tube or green (sodium heparin)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate the serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 8 days; refrigerated: 2 weeks; frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – grossly hemolyzed specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
